"There’s an echo of music, dancing and faint chatter coming from the other side of that illegal threshold. A password, or specific handshake or a secret knock lets you in. And when you walk in and order at the bar, you make sure you keep your voice low and ‘Speak easy’..."
Welcome to our Speakeasy Club! An in-house illustration project, this series is an ode to the prohibition hit era of the 1920s. We collaborated with three Indian bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts to recreate their original cocktails into illustrations that would teleport us to the fearlessly elegant, fashionable and oh-so-notorious era of the 1920s.
If we had to curate the cocktail menu for our Speakeasy Club, here’s what it would look like.

The logo of the Speakeasy Club was inspired by the vintage arches, retro nuances and the art deco typography of the high-spirited era.
To enter a speakeasy, one had to be familiar with a special knock, or a secret password. Once inside, other codewords would be used to order drinks, one of the most common ones being ‘cocktail’. Since most men would drink either beer or straight shots of liquor when this era welcomed women, alcohol began to be mixed with soft drinks, flavoured water and fruit juices to avoid the taste of hard liquor, making such palatable, and irresistible blends fashionable. Imagine that!
